UPDATE - 4/9/09We continue to generate comments on this year old post.....today it was pointed out to me that I may not have received written permission to use the NSB Shadow logo. Although it has been quite awhile I do think I looked for copyright info on the site before publishing. I do see it is on there now. This blog is purely for entertainment and information about New Smyrna Beach, once in awhile we share our opinions on schools, politics and other items of interest. We sincerely apologize if we have offended anyone as that is not our intention.
I am a firm believer in free speech, I often have moments of speaking too freely myself....however on occasion some can take it to an extreme. I was asked to take a look at "The Shadow" , so I did. I am still trying to form a coherent opinion on this site. On one hand I think there is probably valuable information for the public, on the other I have a serious problem with attacking fire and police personnel for any reason. I don't care how much they make it is not enough, ever.
The person behind the Shadow is named Nahum Litt, Whosis has the registration, thanks to anonymous for pointing me in the right direction. This site is a self proclaimed "watchdog" of our community. He has written himself up on answers.com claiming to be
"Online Newspaper and political and fiscal Watchdog Group that monitors political activity in and around New Smyrna Beach, Florida."
He does publish all opinions, even if they are not in agreement with him.
So go have a look at the SHADOW and let me know what you think about this "online newspaper"

The owner is Nahum Litt. Go to whois.net and put in nsbshadow
it will give you the registration. It's no big secret.
BTW - they are a bunch of bullies who feed on the bottom.
At first, I liked the site; but, soon I realized that Judge Litt was nothing more than a disgruntled Chief Administrative Federal Law Judge who was forced to resign under indictments of fraud and inappropriate spending of federal tax dollars. One thing I can't stand is hipocracy. Shame on you Nahum Litt...Shame!!!
Mr Litt needs to do his homework before bashing everyone. EVAC is a private organization. They do not have the luxury of getting to sit at a home station. They work on what is called system status. They have to stay on there trucks for 12 hours and rotate around based on where all the trucks are in order to get the quickest response time. Also they leave the trucks running because its Florida and its HOT so i dont think a bunch of medics with heat stroke would do anyone any good. Come walk a day in there shoes before you bash everyone.
Of course Randy would say hes an Idiot and of course a lot of the people thinks hes bashing the Fire and Police. In reality he is just showing us were our money is going, or went to. There are a lot of Rats out here in New Smyrna Beach and they all have been stealing our money for Years. So dont hate the Player, Hate the Rats
I personally know Mr Litt and his crew. They're all a bunch of dishonest big-mouths.
By the way--they're buying up properties in NSB left and right and they absolutely SUCK as landlords.
The Shadow is a sad thing. It has the capiblity to be a good thing but will never make it there. It is a bunch of ls angry people who have got theirs in life and with the economy in the shape it is, are crying because of poor investments (mostly realestate). The people of the shadow fire off with half truths and things they don't even know about. I think it (the shadow) and airing our dirty laundry on the world web is a true SHAME. I admitt things could be done better at times but no one is perfect. Bottom line.... It's not what you but how you say it!
I joined and left that forum in a matter of weeks about a year ago or so and never went back. Yes, I also witnessed a lot of angry rhetoric and views which I could not support.
I left a few complaints about the format -- the allowing of scrolling, SCREAMING, and such -- and left. The whole experience reminded me of a trip to the asylum.
Then, while doing a search the other day, I accidently ran across a response to my complaint. A response I never saw because I never returned to the forum. The Shadow said he was changing the format to stop some of the scrolling.
Now that Judge Litt is calling NSB to the carpet over public records -- especially those dealing with racism -- I need to go see the changes.

Judge Litt is a great American and his NSB Shadow is in the finest traditions of the First Amendment. Our Founding Fathers supported and read "viewspapers" and reckoned them to be a bullwark against oppression.
Judge Litt was an outstanding Chief Judge and worked for 16 years to protect workers' rights to independent adjudications before neutral judges.
Let the "anonymice" who condemn him here come out from beneath their KKK robes!

The site is controlled by a judge who resigned after getting caught with his hand in the till. He enjoys a Federal retirement(170K a year, that is % 100 of his salary after 15 yrs of service) paid from our tax dollars and has the nerve to complain about city benefits and wages. This site with its mindless followers is a joke. Your post will be deleted if you express an opposing view and you will be blocked from further posts.
The Shadow is the distorted, angry rantings by yet another northern transplant coming here and finding fault with everything. Nothing new at all. Just gossip and slander by a former judge who has serious issues of his own. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone is something I doubt he ever read. I will be glad when he folds up his litle shop and goes away. The people I know, who like me, have lived here many decades, knew he was hot air when he started his little, dark sided view of this fine city and the folks who helped make it. I hope someday he will take a closer look at what he does, and how he does it. Nothing positive, uplifting, or constructive is the result of his handiwork. That's for sure. He does say complimentary things about how he has influenced cahnge which I don't really see as his to claim.
As for getting the facts correctly, the Shadow is often far off base. Case and point is his argument about why people in the Fl Retirement System who have achieved the opportunity to enter the DROP program, are actually retired now and need to be dismissed. In reality, these poeple, have the same jobs they always had and are working hard at those jobs which serve the city. The only difference is because they are close to their full vesting in a retirement plan in which they have served for decades - the money that is being put aside by the employer for their retirement goes into a different account which gives the person a little more flexibility with what they can do when they leave employment. One can only be in this DROP program for 5 years max (at the end of your career) and then you must retire. The Shadow has constantly misrepresented that these people are ALLREADY retired, and for that reason must be let go because they are filling slots new people could fill and being such a costly employee to keep. Did he ever consider that these people have a wealth of experience and expertise, and have worked a lifetime in a plan they were hired under and are using as it was designed to be used. And all he wants to do is pull the rug out from under them. Very cold, heartless, and sad. As a former government employee (judge) you'd think he'd have more understanding for these civil servants. Next time he needs to do some research too and tell the truth, unless his intention is to distort and minipulate with his little newspage.
What is truly amazing is that the Shadow rails on an on about mismanagement of the City, and yet chastizes the City to have more control over the UC. The voters created a separation for a reason - so the City wouldn't run electric and water/wastewater/reclaimed water politically. Nor would they use moneys that should return to keeping the infrastrucutre up tp par, to balance other non-revenue generating departments of the city. The UC is well run, and being managed exactly as set up by the charter in 1967. Again, this proves how little the Shadow knows.
I thought this guy was pretty on target except for the public service bashing. He is a genius compared to some of the local talk show like WELE, Big and "the former mayor of Daytona Beach", what'his name. Not impressed to say the least.
I did not visit the Shadow site for at least a year now. I just went to the site and read some of the content to find the same old dribble and anger. Still about the police and fire deptartment. I have to agree with an earlier post on his conduct on the bench and why he retired. Mr Litt should be ashamed of himself and remember what goes around comes around. We all anwser for what we do one day and people should remember that if nothing else! If he doesn't want people collecting their retirement, then why doesn't he lead by example and give up his?
I worked for Chief Judge Nahum Litt at the OALJ for over 10 years. He was a very fine judge, extremely bright and always fair and wonderful to work for. I have the greatest respect for him. Recent Shadow rantings include one stream about how useless new bathrooms are for a seldom used parking lot on Sapphire (Grace Bracks Park). I for one park and visit the beach there every Saturday and Sunday. If I get there past 8am it is more often than not FULL. On weekdays I also choose this spot when the tide is high to save my car from accelerated rusting. The jiffy johns are pretty funky to use, and that's all that's been there till now. I doubt Judge Litt goes by here, or he'd know it is a popular spot and could definitely use permanent restrooms. I doubt he has EVER used a portapotty, or that he even goes to the beach. Just another negative northerner bringing his black cloud (shadow) with him. What riles me most is editors like him stating things as facts over and over, when they are clearly lies and propaganda.
I visit the Shadow every once in a while and have been doing so for about three years. Interestingly, some of the problems the Shadow has been harping about are being proven correct. (How's that city golf course "loan"working out for us taxpayers?) Even the city commission is now agreeing that city employee (including police and fire) pension and benefit costs are unsustainable.
I don't always like the messenger, but maybe the message is more accurate than not.
The Shadow website is actually quite comical. Judge Litt prints want he wants his handful of "kool-aid followers" to see. Have you ever seen a positive blog on his front or blog page? Not! He and his few followers want to believe they are the majority. All they do is constantanly blog on their opinion page and personally attack the people in this town. The officials, employees, volunteers,
business owners, residents. Yet, not one of them will put their name on a blog. Sickening. Cowards they are.
the slams aren't against the employees, but the UNIONS. 1 in 6 americans are unemployed or underemployed, they can't keep paying public sector union guys checks for life, no matter how mean it sounds, we are broke
